A Warning From The Grave?
Read the inscription on this gravestone by a Union soldier who mourns the destruction the Democrat Party had brought to America. A man who should know. For Nathaniel was a dear friend of Abraham Lincoln. He reportedly went to school with Lincoln. Was brother to Arron Grigsby who married Abe Lincoln’s oldest sister. And often visited him in the White House.
“Through this inscription I wish to enter my dying protest against what is called the Democratic Party. I have watched it closely since the days of Jackson and know that all the misfortunes of our nation have come to it through this so called party. Therefore beware of this party of treason.”

I’m unsure how this has anything to do with either party as we know them today. In the time of Lincoln, the Republican party was originally created as the Progressive answer to the more conservative and staunch Democrats. It was not until the early 1900s that you started to see the shift into Republican/Right/Conservative and Democrat/Left/Liberal… See More. If you look back to Teddy Roosevelt you will see what was the very beginning of the last of the ‘Progressive Republicans’… with Taft very swiftly beginning the branch into the Republican party as we know it today.
To some degree you start to see the Democrats make the opposite shift with Wilson… but not fully until FDR and his “relief, recovery and reform” and New Deal programs.
The ‘Democrats’ which Nathaniel Grigsby would have been denouncing upon his death in 1890 no longer existed in any way, shape or form by the mid 21st century… when the two parties had quite solidly flip-flopped from what they were a hundred years previously.
