Congressional Reform Act of 2010

The following proposed “Congressional Reform Act of 2010″ contains ten provisions, all of which would have undoubtedly been endorsed by those who drafted the original Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Many will say, “this is impossible”.  Take note, however, that Congress currently has the lowest approval of any entity in Government. Surely now is the time for Americans to join together to reform the entity that represents us.

We need a Senator to introduce this bill in the US Senate and a Representative to introduce a similar bill in the US House.  These people will become American heroes.

But who among our representatives has the nerve, conviction or selflessness to stand up for what is right for the people in this age of corruption and greed?

CONGRESSIONAL REFORM ACT OF 2010

1. Term Limits: 12 years only, one of the possible options below.

A. Two Six year Senate terms
B. Six Two year House terms
C. One Six year Senate term and three Two Year House terms

2.  No Tenure / No Pension:

A congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.

Just like the rest of the American people, they should WORK for their income. How is it helping the budget deficit when huge chunks of our tax dollars go to pay annual salaries to elected officials who are no longer active in service?

3.  Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security:

All funds in the Congressional retirement fund moves to the Social Security system immediately.  All future funds flow into the Social Security system, Congress participates with the American people.

4. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan just as all Americans.

5. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise.  Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

6. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

Congressmen can currently choose among several plans and get special treatment at federal medical facilities. In 2008, taxpayers spent about $15 billion to insure 8.5 million federal workers and their dependents. The same taxpayers who often cannot afford health care themselves.

7. Congress must equally abide in all laws they impose on the American people.

Members of congress are currently afforded freedom from arrest while congress is in session except for serious crimes.

The provision of this clause protecting members against arrest is virtually obsolete. It was intended to apply only to arrests in civil suits, a practice common in the late eighteenth century, but no longer followed.

8. All contracts with past and present congressmen are void effective 1/1/11 .

The American people did not make this contract with congressmen, congressmen made all these contracts for themselves.

9. All bills shall be public and not done by behind secret doors.  All discussions of bills shall be done in public.

10. All bills for consideration shall be published 15 days before consideration by all media outlets.

All voters should have the right and the time to contact their congressmen to voice their opinion(s) on any proposed bill. How else can a congressman say they are accurately representing those who voted them into office?

Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career.  The Founding Fathers envisioned  citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.
